A lot of people use the terms “interior design” and “interior decoration” interchangeably because they think they are the same but these professions differ in critical ways. Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space while interior decoration is all about decorating or adorning a place with fashionable materials to make it look beautiful. Interior designing deals majorly with the management of space- analyzing and planning of interior layout in order to make physically, socially and aesthetically functional.
Training: In terms of training the Interior design profession requires specific schooling and formal training. The interior design course involves space management and functional use of space, studying of colors, architecture, the design of furniture, etc. Studying interior design is practical based with a whole lot of site work to facilitate understanding and acquisition of the interior design skill. On the other hand, interior decoration is majorly about decorating a place and doesn’t necessarily require formal education.
What they do: In terms of what they do, interior designers and interior decorators differ. Interior designers create functional spaces in relation to what people do. For example, an interior designer can help manage space to create an office or a reception as the case may be. Space is managed in such a way that it suits the desired purpose. On the other hand, interior decorators decorate an already created space to make it look beautiful.
